Johansen Farms Nursery - Annuals - Perfect PetuniasPerfect Petunias

A GREAT CHICAGO PETUNIA. An abundance of quality petunias exists in the world, but it turns out that most cultivars actually require cooler weather than what a Chicago summer offers. Not surprisingly, the cheapest petunias fizzle out fast; many petunia varieties are great for other cities, but not Chicago.

We prefer to grow heat-tolerant petunias because they perform best in our neighborhoods. Observing our baskets hanging in people’s yards, we take note of how well they last and decide which cultivars to use based on our observations. Over the years, we have learned which Petunias are perfect Chicago Petunias, and we have weeded out those that perform poorly over the season.

This means that a Johansen’s Petunia is a Chicago petunia, locally grown by a family who lives in the neighborhood and sees the fruits of our labor every day.

TYPES AND SIZES   Trailing petunias, spilling petunias, mini-petunias, dwarf petunias—not to mention standard petunias with extra-large trumpet flowers—you’ll discover a profusion of petunias at Johansen Farms! All can be purchased as baskets, pots, hangers, or Buddy Bags—in sizes great and small. Both solids and bi-colors are available, from whites and light yellows to deep purples, rich reds and the hard-to-find oranges. Of course, we have the classic pinks in various sizes as well, making ours the widest assortment of petunias you can find that perform solidly throughout a Chicago summer.

CARE AND FEEDING   Petunias are sun-loving plants but they are thirsty. Water every day and heavily—let the water drain through the bottom of the pot or basket for a few minutes to really soak the soil. Feed them once a week—as the highest-performing athletes of the blooming annuals, they need extra energy to produce countless flowers over and over throughout the season.
